Word Impostor is the pure word version of hidden-role deduction, and you can play it free in your browser. Everyone gets the same secret word except one player — the word impostor — who has to fake it with a clue that blends in. Give one word each, then vote out the faker.
Plenty of hidden-role games lean on locations, roles, or drawings. Word Impostor strips it down to the single most portable thing a group shares: one word. That makes it instant to explain, quick to play, and endlessly re-runnable — the word changes every round, so the game never gets stale.
Everyone sees the secret word except the impostor, and the entire round hangs on the clues people choose.
There is nothing to set up:
Want a themed game? The host can load a custom word list — movie titles, your friend group's inside jokes, a class topic, anything.
The clue is the whole game. Say the word is Library: "quiet" is safe but a touch generic, "shhh" is fun but risky, "shelves" is a strong crew clue. The impostor, hearing those, might bluff "study" and hope it passes. Reading which clue is a bluff — and which crew member is playing it too safe — is where rounds are won. The how-to-play guide has a full worked example.
Word Impostor is our own free, online party game in the hidden-word social-deduction genre. It is not affiliated with any boxed or branded product — just a fast, free way to play with friends on any device.
